Sicilia Bambaataa
2014

A project by Riccardo Benassi
curated by Laura Barreca
Museo Civico di Castelbuono / Palermo (IT)
in collaboration with Ypsigrock Festival

Sicilia Bambaataa is a site-specific project by Riccardo Benassi thought as an environmental installation and a "soundscape"...

A long carpet is rolled on itself, accomplishing a spiral, sliding onto the floor and welcoming the public in a sinuous space...

The artist relates to the architecture of the hall of the castle’s former stables to build a series of "informal sculptures" that invade the place...

To accompany the visitor’s path within the environmental installation, the "soundscape" in the tower of the castle in loop repeats the audio recording of the arrival of a new day...

A three hour recording of the dawn chorus, slowly diminishing as the city awakes, producing sounds and noise pollution which covers the birds singing...

This happens despite the birds increasing by the minute in quantity and species...

The noise pollution turns in a pattern which becomes increasingly insistent and loud as the city wakens: the passing of cars, planes, but especially of passing trains, at first rare then intensifying, turning the animal frequency into a background sound broken by a mechanical racket...

A landscape to "hear": from nature’s time to that of modern life, through sounds that evoke the contradictions of technological society and the relationship between man and machine.
